TGIT! Thank Goodness it's Thursday! It's been such a LONG week. ISTEP (our state's standardized test - part 1) was this week Monday - Wednesday. It has been a crazy, stressful week and I'm glad its coming to an end! With that being said - I definitely tried to balance out the stress with some fun this week. We're working on main idea. This can be a difficult concept for many students. I try to come up with a lot of different ways to explain and show the students this concept and then model how to apply that to reading a text. This week we did Brown Bag Main Idea. Basically - I put together 6 different bags. Each bag had a 'theme' and it had items inside based on the theme. I had a printable stapled to the front of the bag that had an area for me to write the main idea and 3 details (one for each item). I modeled this for the students with one bag and then put them into groups to try. I pulled the items out of the bag one at a time and talked about what I knew about that item. Then when all of the items were out - I asked myself what did all of the items have in common - this would be the main idea. Then for the details - I wrote a sentence about each item specifically. Then when I was done - I was able to take everything I wrote and wrote a main idea paragraph. This activity went so very well and really helped some struggling students understand that the main idea is the big umbrella and the details were the more specific items. I've put this item on TPT if you're interested. Here are some pictures of my students enjoying this activity!
Have a Fantastic Friday!
