Finally Figured out Google Docs

So on my last 2 posts, I posted some free recording sheets to go along with the lesson ideas I was talking about in the posts.  I used Google Docs to easily get them to all of you - however I could NOT get the google doc version to look like what I had made.  Well, I finally figured it out!  So I'm happy to say if you were wanting to download those recording sheets from my past two posts - you now can!!

Just my little rant for today.  :)  Hope all is well in blogland!

iPod Visualizations

So using technology in the classroom is definitely one of the biggest perks of my job.  I love finding different and interesting ways to integrate iPods into reading and math other than just using games and apps.  A few weeks ago my class was learning about the reading strategy of visualization.  We did a lot of different activities to allow the student to practice visualizing text they heard, but one way to make this strategy more of a real life topic was by having the students visualize sounds they hear in every day life and illustrate what they see.  Here's what we did:

I downloaded 6-7 different sound effects of things that are in our everyday life.  Some examples include thunder, lawn mower, ambulance.  There are a lot of websites that offer free mp3 downloads of different sound effects.  I downloaded them onto our iPods and named them sound 1, sound 2, etc.  After discussing what good readers do when they visualize I explained our very exciting activity.  We listened to one sound effect at a time and after listening to each we illustrated what we visualized.  When we were done, we shared and compared our visuals and discussed how the main idea was the same but the details were different and meaningful to our lives.

We had a lot of fun doing this and it really made visualizing come alive for the students.  Below are some pictures I took of my kids completing the activity as well as the recording sheet I used to allow them to draw their visualizations.  Let me know what you think!

Here's the recording sheet! (Click on to download!)
Have a great week blogland!

Cheese-It Area & Perimeter

So I am in no way of taking credit for this idea, but I just had to share.  We actually did this activity a while ago, but I'm just now getting pictures off of my iphone.  What a brilliant idea to use Cheese-its to practice area and perimeter.  All you need is a few boxes of Cheese-Its, some newspaper, and copies of the recording sheet (click to download).  Here are some adorable pictures of my class during this activity!

I just wanted to share!  I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year Everyone!!  I hope everyone out in blogland had a very happy and safe break and holiday season.  I'm excited to start a new year in my life as well as the second semester of this school year!  We have a LOT going on and coming up - so its getting exciting around here.  We haven't gone back to school yet.  Students don't go back until Tuesday, Jan. 10th.  We had a nice long break :)  I wanted to share some of my new year's resolutions in hope that some of you out there can hold me accountable :)

1.  Get closer to God.  I have fallen out of a lot of routines this past year and unfortunately, going to church was one of them.  I want to get back into the routine of going to church and being involved in that community.  I can't wait to go tomorrow :)

2.  Be a better wife.  I'm not saying I'm a 'bad' wife, but I always say there's room for improvement! I want to make sure I'm being the best partner my husband could possibly have.

3.  Get pregnant!  I know that's out of my hands....but my husband and I have been trying now for two years.  We've started some low fertility treatments in hopes that something helps!!  Keep your fingers crossed!

4.  Be a better blogger!!  I started this blog over a year ago.  I was faithful for a while, but then fell out.  I very much enjoy blogging and talking about my life, my students, and my classroom and I want to get back into it.  I'm setting a goal for myself for at least 1 post a week.  I'd like to do more, but don't want to get discouraged if I don't meet my goal.  :)  Hold me accountable everyone!!

So there you go - my new year's resolutions!  I'm excited for the new year!  I hope you all have a good start back to school!  Talk to you soon :)
